Elle Hánsa: Sámi World Map

In 1975, the Sámi artist Elle Hánsa made the first map drawn from a Sámi perspective of Sápmi, the land of the Sámi people. He used Sámi names for the landmarks of the polar region, and used traditional cultural symbols. Like the first photographs of Earth from outer space, Hánsa's map changed the perceptions of those who saw it. The map became an important tool in the liberation of the Sámi people.

Elle Hánsa has generously allowed production of this map on PolarHusky.com in the support of our educational purpose. Please respect the copyright of this graphic and do not print or post it elsewhere without explicit permission from the artist.
