Historic Map: Carta Marina 

 

The Carta Marina is the earliest map of Fennoscandia that gives details and place-names. It was drawn by Swedish archbishop Olaus Magnus, based on his travel in the region in 1518-1519, and the first copies of the map were printed in 1539 in Italy. The map was printed from nine 55 by 40 cm woodcut blocks to produce a document that is four feet by five feet (1.70 m by 1.25 m). Today, there are two originals lefts. The map and the nine wood blocks from which it was made can be seen at the Jason Bell Library at the University of Minnesota. You can access individual sections of the map here:
