We are at COP15 in Copenhagen, Denmark!

December 7 - 15, 2009: We are traveling to the United Nations International climate conference with 18 students and teachers from the circumpolar Arctic to kick off an amazing exhibit at the Danish National Museum as part of GoNorth!'s "What Is Climate to You?"program.

The art exhibited is made by youth in the four communities of Nesseby (Norway), Uummanaq (Greenland), Pangnirtung (Canada) and Shismaref in Alaska (USA) working with artist Chris Germano of the UNIP-GRID program Many Strong Voices.Their own observations of change in each of their communities are illustrated with the most amazing photography telling the short stories in the most powerful way.

December 10:

Pride does not begin to describe the emotions as the incredible climate stories made by youth in Uumaanaaq (Greenland), Pangnirtung (Nunavut, Canada), Nesseby (Sápmi, Norway) and Shishmaref (Alaska, USA) were officially revealed at the National Museum of Denmark on Thursday. The reception was opened by Chair of Inuit Circumpolar Conference and head of Alaska Native Science Commission Patricia Cocjranip, Sápmi representative of the Sámi Council Gunn-britt Retter, and representative European Environmental Agency. The students then presented their communities and the realities of climate change that they are experiencing first-hand during a reception, followed by an emotional speech of confidence from Ambassador to the United Nations Ronald Jumeau. "I am very proud of the children's work and their courage to stand up and express themselves in a room full of delegates" - honorees attending the reception included Nobel prize nominee Sheila Watt-Cloutier and Canadian Ambassador Peter Lundby.

December 8 - 9:

Our delegation has all arrived! It took Meghann, Colleen and Janelle traveling from the coast of the Bering Strait the longest to get here (they left Shishmaref in Alaska on Wednesday last week, arriving in Copenhagen on Tuesday!!) - and so far we have had fantastic days of whirlwind: mingling with decision-makers and other delegates at the conference in the Bella Center; getting ready to perform and enjoying the company of each other; presenting, throat-singing and dancing at WWF's Arctic Tent in the heart of Copenhagen; and walking the city streets, soaking up the buzz! At the WWF Arctic Tent our performance was followed by the amazing "Arctcirq" an Inuit youth circus group from Igloolik, Canada MOVIE TOMORROW!

 

 
December 7:

"The world is really coming to Copenhagen, Denmark this week! I think I was about the only Dane on the plane -- instead it was filled to the brink with what seemed like people of every nation and language. It was beyond exciting, and became even more excited stepping off the plane. Right out the gate you are bombarded with messages about the importance of these next two weeks to all of us. This is a historic moment to be part of and I just wish we all could be to make sure the change needed really does take place here now!" says Mille.

By tomorrow our delegation from around the circumpolar Arctic will meet up as the rest of the group flies in from Alaska, Canada and Norway!
